Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module you will be able to:

  1. 1.Explore, analyse and evaluate global aspects of health and illness

  2. 2.Review, compare and evaluate global health trends and their significance for health improvement activities.

  3. 3.Demonstrate an ability to interpret and evaluate global social trends and their influence on health improvement.

  4. 4.Interpret and evaluate the influence of global factors on UK health and social policy

  5. 5.Select interpret and present global information and explain its relationship to public health and health improvement activities.


Indicative Module Content

In this module you will explore a range of factors and topics indicative of global social change including: Population, demographic change, migration, refugees and asylum seekers, war and social conflict, global trade, transport, tourism, economic development, communication, media, culture and politics, climate change, environmental factors, new social movements, political systems and the distribution of wealth. International and national responses to global challenges.


Assessment

Annotated Audio Visual Exhibit (50%)

For this assignment you will develop an audio visual exhibit  (eg, Keynote or Powerpoint presentation, web page containing photo gallery, audio or video content (via links to other web sites where appropriate). Your exhibit will be supported by written materials providing an analysis of some key issues addressed in your exhibit and supported by bibliographic references.


Response to Stimulus Materials (50%)

For this assignment you will submit a critical analysis response to stimulus materials and questions provided by the module leader.




This module explores a range of global issues and examines their significance for health policy and service provision within a changing global context. By exploring the global issues the module aims to provide you with opportunities to develop your knowledge and understanding and critical awareness of the social, economic, environmental, political and cultural factors that influence health throughout the world and the importance of socio-cultural diversification taking into account differing cultural perspectives on health.
