Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the you will be able to,


  1. 1.Critically appraise a range of theories which underpin participatory research variants

  2. 2.Evaluate multiple information sources, appreciate the value of listening to participant views and gain insights by systematic sifting of conflicting evidence

  3. 3.Appreciate the inter personal and networking skills needed for working with a range of individuals, groups and agencies; respect cultural diversity.

  4. 4.Transfer skills in relevant techniques such as problem mapping, interviewing, observation

  5. 5.Develop participatory research materials with individual and group project participants


Indicative Module Content

Theories of participatory health appraisal for communities, localities and workplace settings; how project appraisal can be linked to health improvement;  using culturally diverse views; involving local people in planning and executing appraisals. Project preparation: identifying key sources, making contacts and establishing networks; engaging people and gaining insights. Preparation for undertaking in-setting training for local people involved in project appraisal and skill transfer. Need for regular and thorough feedback to local participants.


Assessment


Analysis of Participatory Research (50%)

Critical analysis of participatory features of a named research study. Compare and contrast with  other studies focusing on similar topics.


Training Pack Proposal (50%)

Development of a participatory research proposal to include identification and appraisal of selected research techniques and tools.

Outline

Participatory research is recognised as a powerful way of enabling change in complex situations. A key element in locality-based health improvement strategies is to build a picture of problems and possible solutions and founding this on an appreciation of issues from the viewpoint of those involved. This module aims to equip students with the theoretical grounding and essential skills needed in order to carry out participatory community health needs appraisal work as a part of designing a health improvement project
