Intended Learning Outcomes

As you complete this module you will:

  1. 1.Demonstrate an understanding of changes in the nature of health and illness in different geopolitical regions.

  2. 2.Critically appraise political changes such as decolonization and independence and evaluate their impact on health in the former European colonies.

  3. 3.Explore and critically evaluate the impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union on health in the former Soviet Republics

  4. 4.Review and critically appraise the nature and effectiveness of international aid programmes, global trade agreements and crisis interventions on health in poor countries.

  5. 5.Explain and critically appraise ethical and cross cultural issues related to international aid and development


Indicative Module Content

During this module you will explore the changing nature of global health and it’s relationship to social, political, environmental and cultural change. This will include: health in post soviet countries, post colonial health experiences, poverty, international aid and health development, ethics, international aid and globalisation.


Assessment

Seminar Presentation (25%)

A presentation on a negotiated topic exploring an identified aspect of health in transition. You will present your findings through a contribution to an online group activity.


Review Report (75%)

An in depth review (4000 word equivalent) of health transition in a selected region or focusing on a named health issue, e.g. obesity related medical conditions, degenerative diseases etc.


Outline

This module aims to raise awareness and understanding of changing patterns of health and illness in poor countries in different geographical regions of the world.


The module will develop your understanding of global factors that influence individual and population health and provide opportunities for exploration of international political factors that contribute to population health changes in developing nations and the former Soviet Republics. You will also examine ethical and cross cultural issues related to international aid and development.
